How to travel cheap in Nigeria

Book cheap road travel

How do YOU travel cheaply between cities in Nigeria?

Well, I’ll tell you of two ways I used to consider cheap.

One, I go to the local motor park. Two, I grab discounts I can see on the few road transport companies I follow on Instagram throw during festive periods, or you know when they celebrate their anniversaries.

There is another third way. Waiting by the road for sole (a popular term in the South-west for commercial buses that are self-owned) but, I only resort to those when I’m too broke to afford my preferred two ways.

Yes, my preferred two ways worked just fine for me. Except for the annoying times, the local motor park drivers hiked their transport fares for no reason.

However, that changed when a friend told me about a cheaper way to travel in cities in Nigeria – Intercity

What is Intercity?

Intercity is an online marketplace for finding hundreds of routes plied by over 6,000 transport companies in Nigeria and other African countries like Kenya.

At first, I thought they were just another bus company but, my friend explained that Intercity only listed routes plied by road transport companies. Also served as a customer support system for booking trips and after.

Why is Intercity the best Way to Travel Cheap in Nigeria?

Intercity is by far (in my opinion and yours, soon) the best way to travel cheap in Nigeria for two reasons:

  • You can compare prices of road transport companies plying your desired route on Intercity.
  • Intercity gives regular discounts on listed trips.
  • You can travel for free with your referral wallet.

You can compare prices of road transport companies plying your desired route on Intercity.

That is probably the best feature on Intercity. All route prices, in one place. No blindsight.

Intercity lets you see how much each road transport company is charging for your destination. Just search for your desired trip and, voila!

Take, for instance, this listed trip from Lagos – Abuja:

See what I mean?

Intercity gives dynamic discounts off listed trips.

I don’t know about you, but I live for discounts. That’s what got my friend hooked on this online travel site, and frankly, me too.

There are two types of discounts on Intercity.

There is a discount to appreciate their customers for booking way ahead before the intended day of travel. This is called early booking discount

On Intercity, the earlier you book, the cheaper your trip will be. Let me break it down.

If I have a wedding to attend two months from now and I book ahead, Intercity gives me a whopping 15% discount on that trip. Like part of my bills on you? Yes, please.

And guess what? This discount applies to booking even a day ahead. If you have any scheduled trips, go and book before the D-day now. Thank me later.

The second type of discount on Intercity is the social media freebie. Intercity likes to thrill its online customers with freebies. Intercity foot 50 – 60% of their customer transport fares from time to time. Did someone say Santa-city?

You can travel for free with your referral wallet.

Apart from the signup bonus you get as a first-timer, you also get referral money in your wallet every time someone uses your referral code to book a trip on Intercity.

The referral money is a valid form of payment when booking any trip on the platform. If traveling for free sounds like something right up your alley, then start sharing your referral code. But for you to get a referral code, make sure you sign up and claim ₦1000

PS: Your referral bonus has to equate the transport fare of your destination to travel for free.

Conclusion

Now that you have the secret on how to travel cheap between cities in Nigeria in the palm of your hand, what’s your next course of action?
